Englisch - Kompetente Sprachverwendung (C1)
Consolidation II (C1) Group A

After successful completion of this course, you are able to communicate effectively in writing and speaking.
We will practice speaking (discussions, dialogues, communication games, debates, short presentations) so that you can express yourself fluently and spontaneously as well as give clear and detailed descriptions of complex subjects, highlight significant points and arguments with supporting detail and round it up with an appropriate conclusion. In writing you can express yourself with clarity and precision, and relate views and news to those of others.
You will develop the ability to follow extended speech and recognise a wide range of idiomatic expressions since you also have a good command of broad lexical repertoire, including colloquialisms and idioms. You are also familiar with reading strategies that lead to a better understanding of lengthy, complex texts. In oder to obtain a certificate, regular attendance and homework is a must. You will also do in-class quizzes and a final exam.

Certificate requirements: Regular attendance and homework is a must. Your grade will be based on homework, in-class quizzes, one longer essay, and a final exam.

Grammar and Vocabulary (C1)

After successful completion of this course, you have a better knowledge of advanced grammar and are able to apply it in writing and speaking. Furthermore, you will broaden your range of vocabulary, in particular general academic vocabulary needed in higher education contexts.
In this course you will learn about complex grammatical issues such as inversion, connectors, tense choice and subjunctives. You will practice the rules and usages in-class and at home. Writing short texts will give you the chance to use the advanced grammar points.
You will develop a good command of broad lexical/academic repertoire, including colloquialisms and idioms. Reading texts will make you familiary with reading and unknown vocabulary strategies so to better understand complex texts; using new vocabulary in writing and speaking will help you communicate appropriately and fluently.

Communicating in English (C1)

There will be a wide variety of work forms including group work, pair work and individual assignments. Discussions, interactive games and fluency tasks will play a major role. Course material will include articles from journals such as the Economist, Time and Newsweek, newspapers such as the Times, the Independent and the Wall Street Journal, and television broadcasts. The course will provide the opportunity
• to revise more advanced grammar and sentence structure
• to improve pronunciation, intonation and fluency
• to enrich vocabulary and idiom
• to become more proficient in the use of English expressions and proverbs
• to be more aware of cultural differences and levels of formality
• to take an active part in discussions and to be able to express opinions clearly
• to listen to authentic material and to voice opinions about current affairs
• to practise the language of meetings
• to practise the language of presentations and to give an extended presentation
• to become enthusiastic about speaking English and thereby boost confidence

At the end of the course, participants will have improved their communication skills and overall command of the English language to level C1. At this level they should be able to express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for words or expressions. They should be able to use language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes. They should be able to formulate ideas and opinions with precision and relate their contribution skilfully to those of other speakers. They should be able to understand most TV news and current affairs programmes and to express an opinion on topical issues giving advantages and disadvantages of the various options.
